Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rapper. He was born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. In 2019, he signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records, and released his debut self-titled EP “Rema” which peaked at No.1 on Apple Music Nigeria.
Rema gained mainstream success with his debut single, “Iron Man,” which was released in 2019. The song received widespread critical acclaim and was featured on former US President Obama’s 2019 summer playlist. Since then, Rema has released several hit songs such as “Dumebi,” “Lady,” “Ginger Me,” and “Bounce,” among others.
Rema has won several awards, including the Headies Next Rated Award, which he won in 2019. He has also been nominated for several other awards, including the BET and MTV Africa Music Awards. Rema is known for his unique blend of Afrobeat, trap, and pop music, which has helped him carve a niche for himself in the Nigerian music industry.
Rema won the Next Rated Award and received a Viewer’s Choice nomination at the 13th edition of The Headies on October 19, 2019. He also won the Soundcity MVP Award for Best New Artist on January 12, 2020. In addition, he was nominated alongside Burna Boy and Wizkid for Best Viewers Choice: International Act at the 2020 BET Awards on June 15, 2020, making them the only Nigerian artists nominated for that edition. Moreover, Rema’s song “Woman” peaked at number fifteen on the World Digital Song Sales chart.
