Nigerian musical sensation Rema has officially released his long-awaited debut album, Rave & Rose—a 17-track project that showcases the multi-dimensional talents of the Benin City native. Three years after being introduced by D’Prince’s Jonzing World, Rema (real name Divine Ikubor) has exceeded all expectations, emerging as one of the leading voices in the global Afrobeats movement.
Rave & Roses reflects two sides of Rema’s artistic identity. The “Rave” half captures his high-energy, youthful vibe, following a 21-year-old as he explores love, desire, and the highs of fame. On the flip side, “Roses” delves into his more vulnerable, introspective self—sharing personal stories of loss and the emotional weight of rapid success.
Since his 2019 debut with the Iron Man EP, which featured the viral hit “Dumebi,” Rema has become an international force. He’s graced the covers of Dazed & Confused and The Fader, earned early praise from global icons like Barack Obama, Rihanna, Drake, and Skepta, and most recently collaborated with FKA Twigs on her critically acclaimed mixtape.
Rema’s signature sound—dubbed AfroRave—blends African roots with elements of Indian, Arabic, and trap influences. His genre-defying style, boundless creativity, and willingness to experiment are what set him apart. Every lyric on Rave & Roses was written by Rema himself, backed by an all-star production lineup including Andre Vibez, Sarz, London, Kel P, and others. The album features a thoughtfully curated group of collaborators: U.S. superstar Chris Brown, rapper 6LACK, UK’s AJ Tracey, and French artist Yseult. The single “Soundgasm,” released ahead of the album, gave fans a glimpse of Rema’s more sensual and melodic side, setting the tone for the full experience.
Much of 2021 saw Rema pulling back from the public eye to focus on completing the album. Though he shares a home in Lagos with friends, he often retreats into solitude—an introspective habit that has shaped the emotional depth of Rave & Roses. Rema’s evolution is ongoing. Whether it’s his sound, fashion, or creative direction, he continues to push boundaries and redefine what Afrobeats can be. Rave & Roses is not just a debut—it’s a statement.
